birdformation.jpgEveryone who studies the law of attraction already understands that like energy attracts. This concept appears in lots of old sayings, such as “birds of a feather flock together,” or “tell me who your friends are and I’ll tell you who you are.”

But is most commonly expressed with three simple words: like attracts like.

But it’s important to keep in mind that the power of those three words is indiscriminate — it can either work for you or against you.

I was thinking about how this power can be used in harmful ways earlier this week. I encountered several people over the last week that seemed to be practicing a philosophy I could only describe as “lack attracts lack.”

When we think about lack, worry about lack, and focus on lack, what do we get? Bingo — we get more lack. And while all of us can fall into lack-based thinking now and then (I’ve been as guilty of it as anyone), there are folks out there among us who seem to be trying to make a career at of it. 

Anytime we think about what could go wrong, or a rejection we could potentially face, we are doing our self a serious disservice. And it is precisely because like attracts like that lack-based thinking is so dangerous.

Everything in this world is nothing but energy. To some people, that sounds like New Age hippie nonsense, but its science, plain and simple. Physics tells us that at the tiniest levels, everything we see around us (including ourselves) is actually just “strings” of vibrating energy. In quantum physics this is known as String Theory or M Theory, and it is the most universally excepted explanation of the physical world among researchers worldwide.

So if all is energy, what does that tell us about our thoughts? Yep, they’re energy too. And because like attracts like, the energy of our thoughts will always attract like energy to it. If our thoughts are of abundance, strength and joy, we WILL attract like energy to us in the form of other people, circumstances and material objects.

In fact, we ALWAYS attract people, circumstances and material objects that are in harmony with our dominant thoughts. This tells us that no one can attract lack unless they are thinking and feeling lack — it can only come into your life if you are in vibrational agreement with it.

I’ve studied the law of attraction for so many years now, but the implications of that last paragraph still blow my mind. It sounds fantastical, even far-fetched. But at the heart of the matter, is completely rooted in science.

Quantum physicists work in laboratories where they routinely observe molecules that exist simultaneously in two different places! Think about that for a moment. This is not hippie, New Age stuff — it’s hard science. And what does this tell us about the world we live in?

First, it tells us that our “map” of reality is faulty. The world does not work the way we think it works. Me, you, or our greatest scientific minds; none of us can grasp reality. Instead, we create a mental representation of reality, and we go through our lives assuming that “that’s just the way things are.” The truth is,” that’s just the way things AREN’T.” Einstein said “Reality is merely an illusion, albeit a very persistent one.”

But we shouldn’t feel insecure or afraid because we don’t have a firm grasp on reality (and we most certainly don’t). Understanding that “reality” is just a collection of thoughts, beliefs and paradigms in our mind (and not “real” at all) can be very liberating. We can break free of bad habits, bad experiences in our past, and most importantly, our own self image.

We can re-create ourselves anyway we want once we understand that what we think is “real” and what we think is “true” are nothing but mental shortcuts we use to navigate our way through life, and have nothing at all to do with “reality.” As the late great Bill Hicks said about life:

“It’s just a ride and we can change it any time we want. It’s only a choice. No effort, no work, no job, no savings and money, a choice, right now, between fear and love. The eyes of fear want you to put bigger locks on your door, buy guns, close yourself off. The eyes of love instead see all of us as one.”

–Bill Hicks (1961-1994)

Is the law of attraction always working, or only working every now and then when you want it to? When asked, most people will answer that of course the law of attraction isn’t only working when you want it to, but if you look at their lives, they might just live as if it did.

It is easy for us to look at other people and see what they are doing wrong when it comes to the law of attraction, but much harder to take the same look at ourselves. One thing that is repeated over and over again in almost all the material dealing with the law of attraction is the importance of taking responsibility.

We accept this concept in theory, and we might even be able to look at our past and admit to attracting to us the bad stuff that happened. Our problem comes when we are asked to do this in everyday life. It is hard to stop pointing fingers around at other people, blaming them for causing us problems or making us feel bad.

It is hard because we have years of experience with the finger pointing, and a lot of us still have a hard time taking responsibility without feeling that there is something wrong with us or blaming ourselves for the mistakes we made.

As hard as it might be, it is important to take responsibility. The finger pointing and blaming other people only attracts more things to place blame for. As harsh as it may sound, it is never them and always you. Whatever problems you have in your life, you created, and only by doing something different can you create something else.

The first thing you need to do in order to get a better life is to stop pointing to others when something goes wrong or you don’t feel good and start owning up to it. Rather than focusing on what someone else did or didn’t do to you, try to focus on what you can do for someone else.

If it’s been a while since you first heard about the law of attraction and stared implementing it in your life, you might find that you have hit "the slump." "The slump" is my word for that period of time that comes after the first excitement over the discovery of the law of attraction has settled, and you start feeling a little disillusioned
because your millions have not manifested themselves.

If you are anything like me and a lot of other people, when you first started using attraction, you were baffled and exited at how it actually worked. After a while though, it may seem like it got harder to use the law of attraction, or like it somehow stopped working.

It is very common for people to hit "the slump" and give up on using the law of attraction all together. What happens when we get to this point is usually that attraction is not as new and exiting to us anymore, and we don’t dedicate as much time as we used to on the practices that will help us create the life we want. We gradually slip into our old, comfortable habits, and forget that as much as we might like them, they could have a negative effect on our lives.

If this is where you’re at, it is time to do a restart and go back to the basics! When was the last time you made or even looked at a vision board? When was the last time you meditated on money coming your way? As with almost anything else, after the novelty of it all wears off, we tend to not put the same amount of energy and attention to what we want to attract.

I suggest you start your back to basics approach by writing a gratitude list. Looking around you and listing what you are grateful for will steer your mind off negative feelings of discontent (and we all know what they will attract to you).

Here are a few more things you can do to get back on track:

1.Write a new set of goals. You might want different things today than you did when you first started.

2.Make a new vision board. You’re probably so used to the old one that you no longer even really see it.

3. Pay attention to the negative influences you get from the media and the people around you, and change what you focus on.

4. Set of time to meditate on wealth and visualize money coming your way.

5. Study the people you want to be like.

6. Read the books written by the old masters of the law of attraction like Wallace D. Wattles and Napoleon Hill.

These are just a few tips to help you get back on the horse. If you hit “the slump,” don’t waste time on doubt or worries; take action to move forward instead.

Stop looking at what you think is reality, and remind yourself that what you see around you today is the past, not the future.

Just a quick update guys: I (finally) got a new video up on YouTube, outlining what I call the “common sense” of attraction. You can watch the video below, or on it’s original page here.

The video is all about how we each create our own “reality.” Not necessarily in a mystical or metaphysical way–but in everyday, common sense ways. Our choices add up to the reality we live in–every single time.

This is why personal responsibility is such a big part of the law of attraction. Whatever is going on in your life today was created by your actions in the past. Or as someone once said, “Everything Counts.”

Please leave me your comments here on the blog or on the YouTube page, and let me know what you think. I look forward to hearing from you!

Thanks everyone for your continued support of AttractAnything! We’ll talk again soon.

Namaste,
Jon

I am often asked about the “nuts and bolts” of attraction. On a basic, common sense level, it’s easy to see how we attract a great deal of the circumstances in our life, but many people get stuck on one point: “does the Law of Attraction mean that I attract every single thing in my life, or is it just a general rule of thumb?” Continue reading »

In my coaching practice, I am always looking for the simplest, “lowest common denominator’ concepts to present to my clients. It’s not because they can’t understand concepts that are complicated (they easily can), but because the simplest ideas are usually the most powerful.

Simple points have a greater impact on us, and are easier to keep in mind on a daily basis, than long-winded, complicated theories. Simple is good.

With that in mind, I searched for the simplest possible phrase to “sum up” the mindset that is the most useful to use the Law of Attraction, and attract a great life. Continue reading »

You’ve probably heard of Newtons Law of Motion:  ”An object in motion tends to stay in motion.” But did you know that an object in motion will also tend to keep it’s same direction?  This is true of everything in the natural world, including me and you.

This means that whatever direction you are currently on, it will be your “tendency” to continue on that path. If you’re living a rich, full life, you will tend to continue leading a rich, full life. But if you’re struggling, you will tend to continue struggling. You’ve probably heard the old saying, “the rich get richer, while the poor get poorer, ” and this is why. That’s the direction they are already moving in. Continue reading »
