I want to attract a LOT of money, and I need it right now!

I get emails like this — from people who are clearly frantic and desperate:

Jon, you’ve got to help me!!! Tell me what I can do to attract $100,000 by next Tuesday!!!!

Great. Now I have explain to the sender the reality of how attraction works. Namely, that you cannot hope to attract something that you are desperate for.

So when I get these requests via email or my facebook wall it’s always a little sad; I know there is nothing I can do to help them until they get over the desperation they feel. I’ve said it before, but its worth repeating: wanting is like poison when you’re trying to attract good things into your life. The more intense and emotional your wanting, the less likely you will attract anything good. Its a poisonous mindset.

I know, I know. Its easy to say you should be relaxed about money when things are going great; but its more difficult in the middle of an actual financial emergency. I get that. Nevertheless, it is the ONLY way you can hope to attract a positive outcome to your situation. Desperation breeds more desperation. Wanting creates more wanting. It is only by already having what we desire that we can attract more of it.

What? That sounds like a catch 22!!?

You have to already have the things you desire to attract more of them. If there is one secret to attracting wealth, this is it. It also sounds suspiciously like a catch 22, doesn’t it? That’s because (gasp!) it IS a catch 22.

However, there is a way to hack the system Its a time-honored technique salespeople and business leaders have used for ages. Its called fake it till you make it.

The fake it till you make it technique is a method of visualizing yourself already having the things you desire, and psyching yourself into a having state of mind. Its simple, efficient, and best of all, it works.

Dr. Denis Whaitley has worked with world-class athletes for many years. His research has shown that athletes perform better when they mentally rehearse, and see themselves winning. You may have heard about the study where NBA basketball players were taught to visualize shooting free throws and scoring every shot. The players who visualized increased their percentage of successful free throws significantly.

Call it karma, attraction or whatever you like, but common sense tells us that what we put out into the world definitely affects what we get back. The law of attraction says we “attract” people, circumstances and things according to our “vibration.” When we are buzzing with positive energy, optimism and verve, we are in a higher vibration. When we feel angry, victimized or ungrateful, we are in a lower vibration.

The point of all this is simple: you always attract according to your own vibration. This means that your emotional state determines the results you get. If your dominant emotional state is love, appreciation and enthusiasm, you can ONLY attract people, things and circumstances that match that vibration.

That’s why it is important to become skilled at manipulating your own emotional state. You don’t want to just react to outside circumstances, but instead, pro-actively create the emotional state you want within yourself — REGARDLESS of what is going on around you. It requires practice, but the more you work at raising your emotional state, the better you will get. And the better you get, the easier it becomes to stay in that high vibration, and consistently attract things that match your positive energy — things like abundance, wealth, love, friendship and success.

The ability to manipulate your emotional state (and thus, raise your vibration) depends a lot on habits. The most important of these habits is focusing on things that make you feel positive, grateful, inspired, abundant, optimistic and loving. We have the ability to focus our attention anywhere we want, and this is where the process of attraction begins. But this is also where it becomes difficult for some people, because they have old habits of focusing on things they don’t want.

For example, some people love horror movies, and they feel excitement (in the guise of fear) when they watch them. But while they may ENJOY watching these movies, that doesn’t necessarily mean they are good for them. After all, many people enjoy eating chocolate sundaes (like me!), but that does NOT mean they are good for them, or that they’ll will produce good results in the long run.

So you have to take care what you allow “on your radar.” Personally, there are television shows and movies I would really like to watch — but I don’t. I’m a fan of British actor Hugh Laurie who plays House MD. I have loved everything I’ve ever seen Laurie in, and I’m sure he is fantastic as the eccentric, curmudgeonly Dr House. But even though I’m sure it’s great, I have never watched that show — and I never will.

Why? Because House MD is all about disease, ill health, emotional problems, drama and strained relationships. I don’t want any of those things in my life; therefore, I don’t want them “on my radar.” So I don’t watch the show. Simple, right?

Practicing the law of attraction means developing mental discipline. Like me, you may need to occasionally remind yourself that “what you study is what you get,” and deny yourself certain short-term pleasures (like watching House MD or eating chocolate sundae’s for breakfast in order to produce better results in the long-term. But it’s a small price to pay to attract a better life. Plus, you’ll be taking responsibility for your own emotional state–instead of leaving it up to circumstances, chance or the whims of others. Now how’s THAT for real empowerment? =)

A friend of mine watched the movie “The Secret” and was not very impressed. In fact, she told me she thought the law of attraction was a scam, and not a useful philosophy by which to live one’s life. One of her chief criticisms was an often repeated fallacy about the law of attraction which goes something like this: “you can attract anything you want into your life .”

So she asked me point-blank, “this sounds like a scam to me — do you believe that is true?” My answer seemed to surprise her somewhat. I said, “No I don’t, and I’ve been saying so for many years.”

Let me explain. I have been writing, pod casting, speaking and creating videos on the subject of the law of attraction for quite a few years now, and I have always made it a point to discredit the notion that you can attract things you “want” using the law of attraction. I’ve even been critical of web sites, programs, and some so-called “gurus” who espouse this idea. And here’s why:

We do not attract things we “want” into our lives — we attract more of what we already “have.”

The idea that you can attract whatever you “want” represents a fundamental misunderstanding of the concept of attraction. You see, one of the simplest ideas of the law of attraction is that “like attracts like.” We can see this in nature, we can see it in human society, and we can see it in our own lives. Birds of a feather flock together, right?

But because like attracts like, whenever you are “wanting” something, you are simply attracting more “wanting.” And the more desperately you want something, the more you are attracting desperation and want. Now here’s the tricky part…

In order to actually attract things into your life, you MUST get in to an emotional state that feels like you ALREADY have those things.

This is the most common misunderstanding about the law of attraction, and it (understandably) confuses many people. After all, how do you convince yourself you already have something that you don’t physically see in your life (yet)? This is a subject I talk about extensively in the AttractAnything video series, because it requires a fundamental change in the way you look at the world in order to really develop this skill.

And you’ll notice I said that convincing yourself you already have things is a skill. It is. Just like any other skill it requires practice and discipline to master. Now, I’m not about to tell you that I have mastered this skill (yet), but I have certainly come a long way over the years, and I have my moments when I truly feel like a “Jedi Master.” haha =)

To keep it real though, I also have my moments when I’m less effective at this skill, but that’s just called being human. Overall, the more I practice this discipline, the more powerful my ability to create my life becomes, so that even on a bad day, I’m still much more adept at “pulling the universe in my direction” than I used to be, if you see what I mean.

It’s a bit too deep a subject to get into in a simple blog post, but I can give you a brief overview of the process of creating the emotional state of already having something you would like in your life. Your three most important tools are imagination, repetition and passion. Taken together, this is a process I call “applied imagination.”

1. Imagination is what starts the ball rolling. In order to obtain anything in life you need to get a clear picture in your head of exactly what it is you’re aiming for. It doesn’t matter if it’s wealth, physical fitness, love, friendship, or more specific things like a new car, a home, or a dream vacation. The first step is to clearly define what it is you desire.

2. Repetition is the agent of change that brings the creations you have imagined to life. Repetition requires discipline, but it doesn’t have to be a hassle. In fact, it is critically important that you enjoy repeating your visualizations and other methods of bringing your creations to life. If you simply go through the motions, feeling bored or uninspired, your power to attract will be drastically reduced. And that’s where passion comes in…

3. Passion is feeling emotional excitement about your life. In fact, I would say that passion is the fuel of attraction, and perhaps even life itself. Without it, we lack motivation and willpower. It is SO important when you visualize or meditate on the things you wish to see in your life, that you see them from the perspective of already having them, and that you feel strong positive emotions about having them — that you are excited and passionate about them. And passion and excitement are contagious (that is to say they attract more passion and excitement into your life).

There are many, many techniques to help make this whole process easier — the AttractAnything series contains lots of them, for example. It’s also good to remember that some people invent their own ways to “trick” the mind into believing they already have something they desire. Whatever works for you — works for you.

But when in doubt, concentrate or meditate on the concept of gratitude and all the things you have that you are grateful for. When you feel truly grateful for the abundance already in your life, you are on a clear path to attract more of it.

The law of attraction is not a scam, and it does not imply you can attract things you “want.” Some movies, books or programs may imply that, and I’m not saying they are scammers, but I am saying they are wrong. The law of attraction implies that you will always attract more of what you already have. Whether you “have” these things physically, or just in your mind, makes no difference whatsoever. According to your “belief” it is done unto you.

I’ve heard it said that money won’t solve all your problems, but I can confidently make this assertion: there is NO problem you can have in life that LACK of money won’t make worse (think about it).

We all want financial success, but not many of us understand HOW to attract wealth. Most put it down to luck or being born wealthy or some other outside influence. When the truth is…wealth begins inside you. It all starts with your beliefs and your habitual way of looking at the world.

Have you heard the old expression “money is the root of all evil,” or something similar? This paradigm is common in society, and yet there is no truth to it at all. Money is neither good nor bad — it is what we do with it that makes all the difference.

In order to attract riches into your life, you must appreciate all the good money does in the world. If you see money as “sinful” or “evil” you can’t be too surprised when it doesn’t exactly flow to you like a raging river…

It’s true, of course, that there are tight-fisted, stingy and money grubbing rich people. But by the same token, there are also many generous and giving rich people who do untold good in the world (look at the billions of dollars Bill Gates has donated to charity, for example)

It’s helpful to remind ourselves that financial wealth does a lot of good in the world. It builds hospitals, funds charities, paves roads and provides clean drinking water (a really big deal in much of the world) for millions of people. If those aren’t positive things, I don’t know what is. (continued below)

The law of attraction teaches this point of view about money, and I believe it is a useful perspective. Too many of us have been brainwashed into the assumption that lack and scarcity are simply “the way things are,” and abundance is just an illusion. This is the complete opposite of the message of the law of attraction, and completely out of touch with reality and common sense.

Thinking that we have to scratch and claw in the “rat race” for money is a lack-based mindset, and (take it from someone who’s been there) it’s also completely false. This false paradigm points us toward a belief that it is hard to be wealthy (when it actually isn’t). But as long as people embrace this notion, they find it hard to get ahead in life, and often struggle to attain any success at all. Their BELIEFS hold them back.

To attract wealth and abundance, we have to establish a positive relationship with money, and learn to give and receive freely. The enemy, as always, is fear.

Fear tries to convince us that we don’t deserve wealth, or it would be a hassle if we got it, or that it would change us into a bad person, or any number of other silly mistruths. The reality is, we should never buy into “the myth of lack.’ Nature is abundant, and there is always more than enough for everyone, once we open our eyes to it.

A competitive or fearful mindset derails many people who want to attract wealth. It stops the flow, and prevent us from giving and receiving openly. And once that happens, we are no longer living in abundance–we have turned to the “dark side,” the side of fear and the competitive mindset.

The competitive mindset is that little voice that tries to make us resent the success of others, or criticize those who have created abundance. It attempts to convince us we must compare ourselves to other and “keep up with the Jones’.” It is, without any doubt, the reason so many people wind up feeling trapped in the “rat race.” It is nothing less than a prison for our minds.

But it doesn’t have to be that way. We can realize that every one of us has our own path to abundance. And if an individual we know comes into wealth we can feel happy and excited for them, and we should — because our time will come too.

The truth is, there is no reason to EVER compete for wealth. The abundant universe provides plenty for all. Plenty of money, love, success and everything else. It’s all there, just waiting for us to turn our attention to it.

Sometimes I get e-mails or comments along these lines: “I don’t care about all the touchy-feely stuff about real wealth; I just want to make a LOT of money.”

To me, this represents a misunderstanding about the nature of wealth. No one is wealthy simply because they have a lot of money. In fact, I have met some desperately poor and miserable individuals who had large bank balances. One guy in particular comes to mind; a business owner from DC who contacted me a few years ago. His bank balance was healthy, to say the least. And yet, he was one of the poorest individuals I’ve ever met. He had been married and divorced a handful of times; his children would barely speak to him; he had very few friends, but many enemies; and worst of all — he lived in a constant state of fear and paranoia that his “great wealth” would be taken away from him at any moment.

To me, his life sounded like a living hell, not something anyone in their right mind would aspire to.

So what is real wealth? It is about happiness and freedom, in that order. And yes, having a good income does make it easier to live a wealthy life — but only if you understand that your wealth does not COME from bank accounts or material possessions. In fact, becoming wealthy begins ENTIRELY as a state of mind.

Don’t believe it? Consider this point: a person with a miserable mindset can NEVER be wealthy, no matter how much money they earn, how big their house is, or how many toys and possessions they own. With the wrong mindset, life will always be a hassle, people will always be hard to deal with, and you will always struggle with personal issues.

But with the right mindset, every day becomes an opportunity, people become sources of love, strength and inspiration in your life, and the everyday “trials and tribulations” of life become challenges that are manageable, and at times even educational.

And here’s the biggest irony of all: when you realize that real wealth is all in your head and begin appreciating the love and abundance all around you, the financial success has a way of taking care of itself. Sounds crazy, right?

Someone once said, “happiness is the foundation of all success.” I know to some people that sounds like a “touchy-feely” idea that has nothing to do with the hard-nosed business world. But in reality, it has everything to do with business, with success, and with creating real wealth in your life — including that big bank account so many people dream of.

Here’s my personal philosophy on the subject of attracting real wealth. These three points have worked for me, and for individuals I have coached of the years.

1. My state of mind is the most valuable thing I own. Without it, I can achieve nothing, create nothing, or enjoy nothing. Therefore, protecting and nourishing my state of mind is always job one. I will engage in no business practice, or work with no client that negatively affects my state of mind.

When your state of mind turns sour, EVERYTHING in your life turns sour. Protect your state of mind like a beloved child.

2. My two primary goals in life are 1) to enjoy myself as much as possible, and 2) to help others enjoy themselves as much as possible. Anything worthwhile always falls under one of these categories, whether it’s learning a new skill, helping a client overcome personal issues and achieve greater success, playing obnoxiously loud music in the office while working (our neighbors must be saints), contributing to a charity, going for regular dental checkups (perhaps not so enjoyable short term, but clearly increases happiness long term), or taking a crazy road trip across the country with my friends.

Anything that doesn’t help me enjoy my life more, and/or help others enjoy their lives more — has absolutely no place in my life and is promptly discarded.

3. I NEVER worry about money. And believe it or not, it’s not because my income has risen over the years. It is primarily because I figured out that worry, fear and desperation were the BIGGEST ENEMIES of real wealth and success. You know the old saying: “you can’t play the game with sweaty palms.” Sometimes we feel like we “have to” do certain things. We have to take a certain job; or we have to socialize with people who make us uncomfortable; or we have to lose 20 pounds, go to the gym more often, quit eating carbs, get that big promotion at work, etc….

The truth is, you and I don’t “have to” do anything. Sometimes it’s so easy to get scared — to think that life is just going to “swallow us up” if we let down our guard for one split second. But you know what? It won’t. Go ahead and decide that the universe is on your side, that things always have a way of working out for you (haven’t you noticed that already?). It seems like a big leap of faith to take, but once you take it you be wondering what all the fuss was about.

Everyone who studies the law of attraction already understands that like energy attracts. This concept appears in lots of old sayings, such as “birds of a feather flock together,” or “tell me who your friends are and I’ll tell you who you are.”

But is most commonly expressed with three simple words: like attracts like.

But it’s important to keep in mind that the power of those three words is indiscriminate — it can either work for you or against you.

I was thinking about how this power can be used in harmful ways earlier this week. I encountered several people over the last week that seemed to be practicing a philosophy I could only describe as “lack attracts lack.”

When we think about lack, worry about lack, and focus on lack, what do we get? Bingo — we get more lack. And while all of us can fall into lack-based thinking now and then (I’ve been as guilty of it as anyone), there are folks out there among us who seem to be trying to make a career at of it.

Anytime we think about what could go wrong, or a rejection we could potentially face, we are doing our self a serious disservice. And it is precisely because like attracts like that lack-based thinking is so dangerous.

Everything in this world is nothing but energy. To some people, that sounds like New Age hippie nonsense, but its science, plain and simple. Physics tells us that at the tiniest levels, everything we see around us (including ourselves) is actually just “strings” of vibrating energy. In quantum physics this is known as String Theory or M Theory, and it is the most universally accepted explanation of the physical world among researchers worldwide.

So if all is energy, what does that tell us about our thoughts? Yep, they’re energy too. And because like attracts like, the energy of our thoughts will always attract like energy to it. If our thoughts are of abundance, strength and joy, we WILL attract like energy to us in the form of other people, circumstances and material objects.

In fact, we ALWAYS attract people, circumstances and material objects that are in harmony with our dominant thoughts. This tells us that no one can attract lack unless they are thinking and feeling lack — it can only come into your life if you are in vibrational agreement with it.

I’ve studied the law of attraction for so many years now, but the implications of that last paragraph still blow my mind. It sounds fantastical, even far-fetched. But at the heart of the matter, is completely rooted in science.

Quantum physicists work in laboratories where they routinely observe molecules that exist simultaneously in two different places! Think about that for a moment. This is not hippie, New Age stuff — it’s hard science. And what does this tell us about the world we live in?

First, it tells us that our “map” of reality is faulty. The world does not work the way we think it works. Me, you, or our greatest scientific minds; none of us can grasp reality. Instead, we create a mental representation of reality, and we go through our lives assuming that “that’s just the way things are.” The truth is,” that’s just the way things AREN’T.” Einstein said “Reality is merely an illusion, albeit a very persistent one.”

But we shouldn’t feel insecure or afraid because we don’t have a firm grasp on reality (and we most certainly don’t). Understanding that “reality” is just a collection of thoughts, beliefs and paradigms in our mind (and not “real” at all) can be very liberating. We can break free of bad habits, bad experiences in our past, and most importantly, our own self image.

We can re-create ourselves anyway we want once we understand that what we think is “real” and what we think is “true” are nothing but mental shortcuts we use to navigate our way through life, and have nothing at all to do with “reality.” As the late great Bill Hicks said about life:

“It’s just a ride and we can change it any time we want. It’s only a choice. No effort, no work, no job, no savings and money, a choice, right now, between fear and love. The eyes of fear want you to put bigger locks on your door, buy guns, close yourself off. The eyes of love instead see all of us as one.”

I have to admit it: I LOVE my job.

Creating a network of online businesses was probably the smartest thing I ever did (and I’m still in the process of expanding). And even though there are a lot of gloomy opinions about the state of the economy right now, online businesses have continued to do well. In fact, if you’ve ever considered creating an Internet-based biz, right now is an excellent time to start. Why? Simple, many people are so caught up in the rat race and media nay-saying that they are AFRAID to try anything new right now. But those who dare, win. There is less competition online when the “pack” gets nervous and sits on the sidelines. Those who act with faith and an unflappable confidence will have a huge advantage.

Oh, so back to loving my job. What exactly is there to love about my businesses. I’ll just spell out 5 reasons why I love what I do:

1. I work when I want and how I want. I am the boss, so if I feel like leaving at 2PM to hang out on the beach, go kayaking or hiking, that’s EXACTLY what I do. =)

2. Online businesses are mobile–I can work from anywhere. In August I went hiking in Norway and stayed in Europe nearly a month. Did business come to a grinding halt? Nope. Online businesses can be managed, updated and even expanded from anywhere on the planet with an internet connection (which is basically everywhere these days). This gives me an enormous amount of freedom to live as I choose, and WHERE I choose. To me, THAT is real wealth!

3. A web business allows you to use your creativity and every day is different. Have you ever had a crap job, stuck in a grey cubicle all day, performing mindlessly repetitive tasks? Well I have, and I can assure you it was a soul-crushing way to live. Yes you make some cash; but what do you give up? A LOT! Freedom, for one thing. Being able to use your creativity is important to us all. Without it, we become grey and lifeless–we lose interest in life, new things and even our own capabilities.

4. Variety: web businesses change and roll with the times. You never get stuck doing the same thing on an endless loop. You can have an infinite number of websites, dealing with an infinite number of topics. And you can CHOOSE what is interesting to you, and play to your strengths.

5. Web businesses can be started relatively cheaply, especially when compared to their “brick and mortar” counterparts. This means that even if you have an off-the-wall idea for a site, you can still go for it and see how it turns out (you never know). Because start-up costs are reasonable, you’re not going to lose the farm if it doesn’t catch on. The potential downside is not so bad, while the potential upside is incredible.

Now for the downside: er…there isn’t one ! Just kidding–all businesses have downsides, and being a webpreneur is no different.

For one, there is a learning curve involved in doing business online. It is important to get a mentor to guide you through the mind field in the beginning. It will save you lots of late night head scratching and frustration.

Another potential downside is that most web entrepreneurs work solo. If they do have employees, they are usually out-sourced, so you’re not working in close contact with others on a day-to-day basis. Because of this, it is important to maintain social connections, and get out of the office often. Fortunately, the nature of the biz allows you to work from anywhere, so with a little effort, you can keep your social life hoppin’ and still grow a very protible business.

Other than that…nope. I can’t think of anything.

So, is Being a web entrepreneur a good way to attract wealth? You better believe it!

Today I just wanted to remind everyone (including me) how important it is to spend your days doing what you love. They say nothing is guaranteed in life–and tomorrow is not a “given” — not for any of us. That’s why it is so important to do what you love to do in life, and do it TODAY.

If you find yourself toiling away at a job or a lifestyle or in a relationship or (fill in the blank) that you don’t like on a daily basis, it’s time to make a change. But what is it that keeps us from moving forward in life, from letting go of those things we don’t want? One word: fear.

Fear keeps us in a perpetual state of indecision, and prevents us from recognizing and claiming our true calling in life. And don’t misunderstand me–I don’t mean YOUR fear is holding YOU back. Not at all. Fear is universal, and we ALL deal with it sometimes. I have to face fears all the time–sometimes I do so admirably, but other times I cave in or whimp out. That is simply part of the human condition, and I have personally never met anyone who has COMPLETELY conquered fear from their life.

But the good news is, you don’t have to conquer fear completely to become a more-evolved, more highly functioning (i.e a prosperous and successful) person. But you DO have to make an effort, and try to face up to your insecurities and fears, and then move forward even though you are scared.

“Just a Dream”

A client of mine in New Zealand once told me his greatest dream was to buy a boat and sail around the world. When I asked him what action he had taken toward acheiving that dream he replied, “nothing, I mean it’s just a dream — not something I could actually do.”

And of course he had a long laundry list of reasons why he could never sail around the world; too dangerous, required too much money, his family wouldn’t accept it, and so on… But when we went through his reasons one by one, he discovered that ALL of these excuses were based on one simple mindset: fear.

And you know what? Whether he eventually sails around the world or not is not terribly important. But whether he tries to make it happen or not is VERY important! Trying — expending effort on behalf of our dreams — is everything in life. Because lets face it: we all have only so many days and so much energy to spend on this planet. What we do with it is entirely our call. If we don’t use our time and energy in the pursuit of our dreams, then by default, we will use our time an energy on things we don’t like or care about. Imagine looking back on your life from your last day and realizing that you wasted it on things you didn’t care about at all. Scarey thought, isn’t it?

Do What You Love — Full Stop

Even if what you love seems impractical or improbable, do it anyway. The alternative is to give in to fear, and let it keep you in servitude to things you don’t like for the remainder of your years.

You (like me) will likely never conquer all of your fears. That’s just life, and you should never feel bad about that–being human is a GOOD thing after all. Just keep pushing toward what makes you happy, what drives you. Do what you love, or die trying. The alternative is to do what you hate, and die doing that.
