“That’s Impossible – You Can’t Do That!”
That’s Impossible – You Can’t Do That!”
How many times have you heard someone say that? I know I’ve certainly heard comments like this many times in my life. For example, when I started my first online business, there were people who told me I couldn’t expect to turn a profit within the first six months — or maybe even within the first year.
“Business Just Doesn’t Work Like That”
Nevertheless, my first online business was profitable within 30 days, though many of these same people refused to believe it (beliefs are powerful — even the ones that hold us back!). One acquaintance who had been working on line a few years flatly told me, “business just doesn’t work like that.”
“Impossible” Things Happen Every Day
What this gentleman and others like him forget is that seemingly “impossible” things happen every day. Things that we take for granted today, like speaking to someone on the other side of the planet in real-time, or being wirelessly connected to the World Wide Web everywhere we go, would have seemed like a complete fantasy not so many years ago.
In fact, I read something interesting today which proves how the impossible becomes possible all the time. A software engineer in Germany has created a music program that will analyze a full composition and separate individual parts from it — guitars, horns, pianos, etc., allowing them to be re-tuned, placed in a different key, or even altering just one note of a trumpet solo, while leaving the other instruments completely untouched.
This may not sound like such a big deal, but with in the Pro audio and music industry, it is considered something of a landmark achievement. The reason why? For decades the idea of editing individual instruments within a finished mix was considered to be “impossible” by audio experts. And yet, the creators of the Melodyne music editing software are about to release a new program that does exactly what the experts said could never be done.
You’ve probably never heard of this software, and it’s just one small example of how people do things every day that seem “impossible” to the majority. Only 100 years ago 99% of humanity (if not more) considered flying to be an impossibility — that is, until the Wright brothers prove them wrong. And only about 50 years ago, virtually no one believed it was possible for humans to walk on the moon…
The point is, what we consider “impossible” today will likely be an everyday occurrence in years to come — and maybe sooner than we think. In fact, one of the most certain facts of modern life is this:
Things that are considered to be “impossible” can and do happen all the time.
So what about you? What is “possible” for you, and what is “impossible?” If history is any judge, many of the things you believe are impossible for you are well with in your capabilities. As a general rule, human beings dramatically underestimate their talents, capabilities and resources. We are capable of MUCH more than we know — perhaps MUCH more than we can even fathom.
Knowing this, doesn’t it make sense to re-examine your beliefs, and begin questioning your perceived limitations? Remember, so-called “impossible” things happen every day. You might as well admit the truth: they can happen in your life too!
With gratitude,
Jon
